Last Word on Bobby Clarke

Reviewing Clarke's trading record I think he's made more good moves than bad ones overall, although in recent years he had been unable to swing that impact blockbuster deal like the Desjardins/Leclair to Montreal trade or Renberg and Dykhuis for four first rounders.

There are very few teams who have been as successful at drafting in the first round in recent years, especially considering draft position:

Flyers 1st Round Picks - 1995 to 2005

1995 Brian Boucher #22
1996 Dainius Zubrus #15
1997 Traded
1998 Simon Gagne #22
1999 Maxime Ouellet #22
2000 Justin Williams #28
2001 Jeff Woywitka #27
2002 Joni Pitkanen #4
2003 Jeff Carter #11
2003 Mike Richards #24
2004 Traded
2005 Steve Downie #29

Overall, it was time for the Flyers to shake things up and the only way to do it right now would be to get rid of Clarke and Hitch. That doesn't mean that Clarke wasn't successful in Philly (although he was unable to bring them a Cup). This was the right time for this move and it will be interesting to see how this impacts the team on the ice in the short-term.
