I thought it would be interesting to see exactly what the Habs got in return for arguably the greatest goalie of all-time:

Niklas Sundstrom - 154 GP, 49 PTS

That's 1347 total games on forward/D (primarily from Rucinsky, Weinrich, Thornton and Sundstrom) and 580 points, plus another 319 starts in goal out of Thibault and Hackett.

Just over 11 years later (once Sundstrom returned to Europe) the Canadians have nothing left to show for the deal. Over that time the team made the playoffs six times and won three rounds.

Of course King Patrick would go on to play eight seasons in Colorado, winning two Cups and sixteen playoff rounds.

I like this entry. Wow, that's gret that you summarized that. I wonder what GM's think about something like this when the "look back" --- I'm not sure enough of them do... always claiming to be looking forward ;)

Thanks. I did the same thing once for the Lindros and Gretzky trades - I will have to update them and post one of these days..

Danny99 - Interesting you should bring this up. Quebec's dealing of Lindros actually garned the Avs Roy via Thibault, as I'm sure you know.

To save you the trouble of a weeks hard work, I posted a three parter on the Gretzky deal, back a few moths ago. Here's the link:

http://wwwrealitycheckeyesontheprize.blogspot.com/2006/08/gretzky-trade-pt-3-transaction.html#links

Parts 1 and 2 are good reads also - I just hope I never ever have to do so much research again! Enjoy

The Roy piece here was a good read and at a quick peek I enjoyed the site. If don't get around to linking up to in a matter of days, drop by and remind me. Thanks.

BTW: Scott Thorton did fetch the Habs one Juha Lind - another of GM Houle's forgotten master strokes. Lind went on to become completely irrelevant!

Have a good one!
